چکیده

For the first time a record of total solar irradiance covering 9300 years is presented, which covers almost the entire Holocene. This reconstruction is based on a recently observationally derived relationship between total solar irradiance and the open solar magnetic field. Here we show that the open solar magnetic field can be obtained from the cosmogenic radionuclide Be measured in ice cores. Thus, Be allows to reconstruct total solar irradiance much further back than the existing record of the sunspot number which is usually used to reconstruct total solar irradiance. The resulting increase in solar-cycle averaged TSI from the Maunder Minimum to the present amounts to (0.9± 0.4)Wm. In combination with climate models, our reconstruction offers the possibility to test the claimed links between climate and TSI forcing.

Solar influence on the Indian summer monsoon during the Holocene

[1] The large (8%) changes in the past seasonal insolation have a well-documented influence on the Indian summer monsoon. However, the effect of the small (<1%) decade to century scale solar variability is less certain. Evidence is emerging that Earth’s climate is sensitive to small changes in solar output on centennial time scale during the Holocene. Comparison of a recently published proxy re...

Cyclic variation and solar forcing of Holocene climate in the Alaskan subarctic.

High-resolution analyses of lake sediment from southwestern Alaska reveal cyclic variations in climate and ecosystems during the Holocene. These variations occurred with periodicities similar to those of solar activity and appear to be coherent with time series of the cosmogenic nuclides 14C and 10Be as well as North Atlantic drift ice. Our results imply that small variations in solar irradianc...

A new approach to long-term reconstruction of the solar irradiance leads to large historical solar forcing

Context. The variable Sun is the most likely candidate for natural forcing of past climate change on time scales of 50 to 1000 years. Evidence for this understanding is that the terrestrial climate correlates positively with solar activity. During the past 10000 years, the Sun has experienced substantial variations in activity and there have been numerous attempts to reconstruct solar irradianc...

Possible linkages of late-Holocene drought in the North American midcontinent to Pacific Decadal Oscillation and solar activity

[1] Paleorecords are key for evaluating the long-term patterns and controls of drought. We analyzed calcite in annually laminated sediments from a Minnesota lake for oxygen-isotopic composition (dO). The dO record of the past 3100 years reveals that droughts of greater severity and duration than during the 20th century occurred repeatedly, especially prior to 300 AD. Drought variability was ano...

ENSO as a mediator of the solar influence on climate

Using a climate model of intermediate complexity, we simulate the response of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system to solar and orbital forcing over the Holocene. Solar forcing is reconstructed from radiocarbon production rate data, using various scaling factors to account for the conflicting estimates of solar irradiance variability. As estimates of the difference since the Maun-der ...
